SUSSEX UNIVERSITY THREE-YEAR FUNDED PhD SCHOLARSHIP
The Morris and Bessie Emanuel PhD Scholarship in Modern Jewish and Israel History
and Culture
This is an offer of a fully funded three-year ‘Morris and Bessie Emanuel’ PhD scholarship,
commencing in September 2025. This is for an outstanding doctoral candidate wishing to pursue
a research project in Jewish studies, including Israel and Holocaust studies. Highly motivated
current and prospective graduates with an outstanding academic record and a strong interest in
the relevant topics are encouraged to apply.
The Sussex Weidenfeld Institute of Jewish Studies is one of the few research institutions
dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of Jewish history and culture. It places the Jewish
experience in a broader context. The institute is committed to creating a learning environment
that not only expresses a wide range of opinions but also fosters the incubation of new ideas and
efforts to enhance and deepen our civil society. As a leading intellectual hub, the institute
engages in the interdisciplinary study and public discussion of the Jewish experience and its
relevance to the key challenges of our time.

Amount
The scholarship covers UK or international fees and provides a stipend to cover living expenses
that matches that provided for UK postgraduate researchers by the UK Research Council
(currently £19,237).
Eligibility
The recipient of this scholarship will be enrolled in a research degree in the Faculty of Media,
Arts and Humanities, commencing in September 2025. Applicants must meet our entry
requirements:
– At least an upper second-class (2:1) undergraduate honours degree or equivalent
international qualification.
– A Master’s degree or an equivalent international qualification.
The scholarship is open to UK and Overseas/international students.
Application Process
Applicants must apply online for a PhD in the Faculty of Media, Arts and Humanities. Find out

With your application, please include:
– Research proposal (2500 words)
– CV
– Statement of purpose (500 words)
– Degree certificates and transcripts. If the originals are not in English, certified
translations must be provided
– Your English language qualification, where applicable
– Two academic references, including one from your most recent university. Or you can
provide the contact details for your referees on your application and they will be asked to
submit their reference via email.
